I liked this, but didn't love it. There was a huge info dump at the start that felt like way too much too soon, then there was the fact that Sam is forty but acts maybe twenty. Also there were huge time jumps, the first one being a five year jump. So much of this story was told and not shown. Even the ending was anticlimactic as Sam waited for rescue. The romance was insta with no time spent on developing anything emotional there. And really things just happened way too easily. I just couldn't fall into this at all. I enjoyed the drunk lunch scene with Sam and his team, but otherwise this book felt a bit tedious. I think I'll be leaving this series here. This is hands down one of the best books I’ve read this year. I’m almost sad that I got an arc because it means I have the longest wait for the next book in the series, but I guess that just means I’ll have to read this one again at some point, which is definitely not a hardship. It’s absolutely hilarious, has such incredible and full world building, and has so many wonderful characters, it would be impossible to pick a favorite. The romance is secondary to the main plot, but it’s definitely there in all it’s growly glory, and I love Sam and Gideon together. I want all the books in this universe right this second, but I guess I’ll settle for swooning over this one for the time being.
