The Hotshots Collection binds three novels by Albert, focused on a fire fighting camp near Bend Oregon. While each focuses on developing a relationship between a specific pairing, the stage is broadly cast and populated with team members, families and an interesting small town.The first novel in the collection is Burn Zone, set in central Oregon. The protagonists are Lincoln, experienced smoke jumper, and Jacob, a rookie and youngest brother to Wyatt, a team member with Linc who had died recently in a jump. The plot is full of angst, as Jacob revisits his puppy love and Linc deals with a promise.toWyatt. Albert plays the family dynamics expertly, as well as the fire fighter crews. The sex scenes are well done, without scorching details. I particularly enjoyed the frisson of control in foreplay. Hunky men details are a bit too glossed over for me. 4.5 starsIn High Heat, the story continues with a focus on Garrick, team member to Linc and Jacob from the first book. He has partially recovered from his injuries sustained smoke jumping, self isolating in his home while striving during PT to resume his career. A stray dog brings him in contact with his neighbor's grandson Rain, the product of a Portland commune. Bonding over Cookie, the relationship grows despite the chance that it is temporary. Angst triggers communication, revelation yields compromise, dreams are modified. Albert writes a very thought provoking story with some poignant scenes, mixing in (and educating about) passion with a person with physical limitations. No smoke jumping in this episode, but more education on fighting fires in the forests of Central Oregon. 5 starsFeel the Fire takes a different tack in this collection. Rather than smoke jumpers teaming up, Albert presents two management level fire fighting experts as the focus of the story, albeit one with a twenty year backstory. Analyst Luis is lent to the team in Oregon by his Angeles base. Initially dreading reacquainting with Tucker, he soon begins blending into his family of twin boys, ex-wife and her husband and their young daughter. The leads from both of the previous books get cameos. The use of graduating seniors Wade and Walker's post high school planning plays well into their father's analysis of possible career change. While a slower moving plot, the use arson investigation keeps it interesting. Tucker's demisexual status introduced a slower and more mature level of passion, no monkey sex. 4.5 starsMy only general suggestion would be to clean up the physical content to eliminate the duplicating promotional and marketing filler at the end of each novel.
