I loved the writing and enjoyed the story but I did want a bit more. This story closely follows the usual historical trope of the young, naive, innocent female character having a crush on her brother's best friend and being preyed upon by the villainous person she has to escape (but is ultimately rescued from). It follows the trope so closely it almost seemed unnecessary for Warry to be a male. There was nothing substantially different.I was also left wondering why Warry and Harrington liked each other. I could see the young boy getting a crush and falling in love with the older, cooler guy. But it felt like happenstance. Had Warry grown up near someone else he would have been in love with that guy. We get some flashbacks to how they grew up and what caused the crush and how Harrington could have also started to get a crush, but overall they have nothing in common. There's never a scene where Warry is talking about animals and Harrington is charmed and listening. It's the exact opposite in fact. So what do these two talk about? What do they connect on besides growing up together? What, other than finding him attractive, does Harrington love about Warry? That is really never seen or answered.Outside of Harrington being jealous, arrogant, and super focused on himself, we don't learn much about him. What he likes, doesn't like, his sense of humor. So there's nothing for me to latch on to and say, "Ohhhh, this is what Warry sees." We learn a bit more about Warry, but honestly not by much. Which makes it equally as tough to know what draws Harrington.But what the book did do is set up Gale Christmas to perfection. I cannot wait for his book! He seems like a full, complex character and I hope his counterpart is equally as awesome. The excerpt was a great tease. I was a bit disappointed in this story. Hartwell is kind of a bully and a jerk. Warry is his bestfriends younger brother and he is trying to find his own way in society. He finds himself in trouble and with a side of a bruised heart and tender feelings.I felt bad for Warry. He deserved better. I received this book as an ARC and was excited to read it but it wasn't the romantic regency read I was looking for.
